Doha is making the move to position itself as the major hub of the middle east as Dubai has now become. Flying in over the Persian Gulf, I had the pleasure of watching the full moon slowly set and distort in both shape and colour as it lowered down to a nearly indiscernible horizon. After it finally dipped below the morning haze, we were left in a pastel rainbow twilight when neither the sun nor the moon were showing their face.
The landscape was moonlike save for the various sand coloured encampments that make up the oil refineries. Other than a dull brown landscape, a few flames could be seen along the shoreline. The buildings become more interesting as you arrive at Doha where you can see the build up of sand island communities and the somewhat abrupt cluster of tall city buildings which I assume make up the 'down town'. It's not unlike Las Vegas.
Highlights of this airport have been an extremely new smelling and modern building complete with a nearly 1.5km walk to the transfers section to get your blood flowing again (with an equidistant walk back once you rush through the harried security scan). Additionally, I was worried about my layover on the way home because its over 8 hours in the airport, but thankfully there are gender segregated lounge areas which are quite peaceful. I imagine I'd be more comfortable sleeping on the floor in here than in the hallway with hundreds of strange feet and the floor buffer buzzing by!
Alright, tally ho-- an airplane calls my name once again.
